An ordinary day in the life of Jesus would have been so different from an ordinary day in the life of most Christians today. Unfortunately, we have lost many of the practices that helped the disciples remain connected to Jesus and the result can be that we bear very little fruit and find ourselves burnt out by the challenges of life.
Join us for this series as we look at the disciplines that Jesus embraced to remain connected to the Father.
WEEK ONE: FASTING
Before Jesus went into ministry, he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. The bible never mentions Jesus fasting again, but it does tell us that the disciples made this a regular occurence. Over the next 21 days we’re asking you to fast something that takes time that could be given to create intimacy with God, takes headspace that could be given to prayer and creates humility and dependance on God.
Pray about what you feel the Lord wants you to fast. We encourage you to replace the time you’d normally spend doing whatever you’re fasting from, with time dedicated to the Lord.
IDEAS ON WHAT TO FAST
Entertainment, Idols (Netflix / YouTube / Sports)
Vice, Idols (Alcohol / Swearing / Gossip / others)
Diet (News / Radio or podcasts while driving / certain meals in the day)
WEEK TWO: SHABBAT
The practise of shabbat is something that is beautiful to the Christian faith because it is a picture of building community around God instead of trying to bring God into community. For us to remain connected to God, we need practices that put God at the center and bring people around Him.
Shabbat symbolises the transition from work into a space of rest, which is a way of describing what our whole Faith is about. This week we have included some instructions from you to host and arrange a special meal in your home with family or friends and some invitations to give them.
WEEK THREE: PRAYER
Jesus had habits. He lived in the rhythms of grace which he did though a steady practice of disciplines including solitude, giving thanks and prayer. What western Christianity doesn’t teach us is how those practices were built into our daily patterns of life.
We’re encouraging you to build these rhythms into your life by including 3 prayers for you to pray throughout the day (click the download button below to access them). As you set this time aside to realign throughout the day, see how your state of mind and connection to Jesus is transformed.
